SSEN and MAL Civils Announce Major Subsea Cable Upgrade for Loch Erisort

A significant upgrade to the electricity network serving communities around Loch Erisort is set to begin, as SSEN Distribution partners with local contractor MAL Civils to replace the ageing 11kV submarine cable that has powered the area for more than three decades.

The existing cable, first installed in 1994, is approaching the end of its operational life. SSEN says the replacement is essential to meet the region’s long‑term energy needs and to maintain a resilient and reliable supply for homes and businesses across Laxay, Kershader, and neighbouring townships.

A Major Infrastructure Project for the Islands

The project will be moving into construction during February and March, with completion targeted for Summer 2026. The work will see a new high‑voltage 11kV submarine cable installed within a designated corridor across Loch Erisort. Once the new cable is fully commissioned, the existing one will be retired from service.

SSEN has been progressing the planning of this project since 2023, carrying out route surveys, environmental assessments, and engaging with the local community to ensure the work is delivered responsibly and with minimal disruption.

Benefits for Local Communities

The project represents a major investment in the resilience of the Western Isles’ electricity network, delivering several key benefits for the communities supplied by this part of the network, including secure reliable power for decades to come. Additional benefits include:

  • Reliable Power Supply – The new subsea cable will strengthen the electricity network, reducing the likelihood of outages and ensuring a stable supply for households and businesses.
  • Economic Stability – A dependable power network is vital for local employers, schools, and healthcare facilities. SSEN says the upgrade will help support future investment and community development.
  • Resilience & Safety – Replacing ageing infrastructure reduces the risk of faults and enhances the overall safety and durability of the network.

Working with Local Expertise

To deliver the project, SSEN is partnering with MAL Civils, a contractor based in the Western Isles. The company will support construction activity onshore, helping to coordinate works in a way that limits disruption to residents and road users, while helping to keep commitment to keep communities informed while these essential works progress.
